Translation of the ent.hunantv.com article:

Golden Hawk/Eagle Entertainment News (Beijing reporter: Feng Zi Jian).

On 10 June, the public service animated film on anti-human smuggling cum sex trade, Jiao Hui Dian (aka Intersection) was introduced at the 798 Arts Centre in Beijing. The dubbing team, comprised of movie king Zhang Hanyu and actors Yuan Quan and Alec Su, was at the scene to aid the promotion. The character for which Zhang Hanyu did a voiceover is a professional human trafficker who provides girls to brothels; Yuan Quan's character is one of the "prostitutes" sold by Zhang Hanyu; Alec Su’s character is one of the "brothel customers."

Zhang Hanyu and Alec Su, not wanting to repeat their former image, have specially chosen villain character roles

Movie King Zhang Hanyu and well-known actors Yuan Quan and Alec Su did voice-overs for three leading characters, and were present during the ceremony (to help promote the animated film). Among the trio, apart from Zhang Hanyu who has a vast experience of dubbing, it was the first time for Yuan Quan and Alec Su to do this kind of work. At the site, both Yuan and Su would continuously praise 'big brother' Zhang Hanyu's mature voice for its magnetism and character; their exaltations led the Movie King to beam with pleasure, and he revealed that he had done dubbing thousands of times; hence, he was able to do the voiceover for his character in the animation easily, since he was on familiar grounds and was able to figure out the role of the character without much problem.

It was disclosed that because the recording dates and times were staggered, Yuan Quan and Alec Su did not have the opportunity to consult Zhang Hanyu prior to the recording of their dubbing, despite the fact that there are scenes in the movie where the three characters are together. The recording of the dubbing for the three was done separately and the recording was joined together later. In order to witness the power of Zhang Hanyu's dubbing of Zuo Luo, Yuan, Alec and the media together tried to coax Zhang Hanyu to the platform for a demonstration during the preview event but, in the end, Zhang Hanyu tactfully declined, saying, "Whatever movies I have dubbed, I can't remember the actors' lines."

Zhang Hanyu has all this while been taking on positive roles in movies, and similarly, Alec Su has all along impressed people with the image of youth and sunshine. Discussing the roles selected to be dubbed, both had, without exception, selected their particular character roles in order to make a breakthrough. "I did not want to dub that undercover cop, as I have already acted as well as dubbed many such police roles, and I wanted to try out a negative role." Zhang Hanyu smilingly told the reporters. It was revealed that Zhang Hanyu also hoped to be able to act a negative role in his upcoming movie/TV dramas. However, there is currently no concrete plan.

Brief, Simple, Concise and Thought-Provoking, Kind Support from Hollywood's Celebrities

During the preview ceremony, after the screening of the more than half-hour film, the brief concise plot of the story was clear. Apparently, the human trafficker, 'Zhang Hanyu', sold the poor girl 'Yuan Quan' to the brothel, and had used a combination of threats, violence and promise of gains to force her to accept the sex trade. She was with a brothel customer 'Alec Su' when, fortunately, an undercover cop was going into the brothel to arrest 'Zhang Hanyu', and, soon afterwards, the cop rescued her successfully.

Although the story line and setting are simple, the film is tremendously thought-provoking, fully exposing the darkness of the world of human trafficking and sex trade, as well as the heart of the brothel owner. In the film, the ‘boss’ bought 'Yuan Quan' from the human trafficker, 'Zhang Hanyu' who, in order to force Yuan Quan to enter the sex trade, not only used Yuan Quan's younger sister as blackmail, but also personally violated her.

It is reported that there are about 2,500,000 victims of human trafficking in the whole world. More than half of these victims are from Asia-Pacific regions. Every year, human traffickers make a huge profit of more than 100 million American dollars. Jiao Hui Dian (aka Intersection) is one of MTV EXIT's productions in its operation against human trafficking. The public welfare activity has gained great support from Hollywood's Angelina Joli, Hong Kong singer Karen Mok, Korean singing star Rain and many other celebrities. The animated film will be screened on MTV China on 13 June at 11pm, and on the following day at 2.30pm.

Veteran Taiwan star looks to China as the future
Fri Jun 12, 2009 1:19am EDT

By Ben Blanchard

BEIJING (Reuters Life!) - For years, many of the hottest entertainers in China have come from Taiwan and Hong Kong, places fans believe make for edgier performers. But veteran Taiwanese singer and actor Alec Su thinks this will change.

Su, still going strong two decades after starting his career and who is mobbed by fans whenever he sets foot in Beijing and other Chinese cities, believes the sheer size of the audience in mainland China is becoming a huge influence on the music scene.

"If you look at the population, there is a huge difference between Taiwan and Hong Kong and the mainland. Slowly but surely the mainland will be seen as a major market," Su told Reuters in a rare interview with foreign media.

"I believe that the influence of the mainland will only get bigger. They have the most people who will watch films, or listen to music," he added.

Hong Kong and Taiwan stars have been seen by mainland Chinese as cooler and more avant-garde than their domestic counterparts, who have to tread a cautious creative line to avoid getting into trouble with the Communist government.

Taiwan's Jay Chou in particular is massively popular in China, his face adorning countless advertisements.

But mainland pop singers such as Li Yuchun, winner of a television talent show in 2005, have already made inroads in an industry traditionally dominated by "outsiders."

"I think there's a lot of very good mainland singers, very creative. What they are writing about, their lives, have changed vastly because of China's opening up," Su said.

"Our mainlander friends see this as very cool. They won't necessarily feel the same way about Hong Kong or Taiwan."

China and Taiwan have been ruled separately since 1949, when defeated Nationalist forces fled to the island at the end of a civil war. But since tensions between the two governments began to ease in the late 1980s, cultural and economic exchanges have rocketed, helped by a common language and culture.

Su owes his fame to Little Tigers, a Mandarin boy-band reminiscent of Take That or New Kids on the Block and which rocked the Chinese pop world from the late 1980s.

But in the often bubble-gum world of Mandarin pop music, where flash-in-the-pan singers change styles and even their names with alarming frequency, Su is a rare example of an artist who has maintained his popularity.

"I think I'm very lucky that I've always had opportunities," Su said bashfully when asked to explain his enduring appeal.

"Also, I'm a Virgo, I'm a perfectionist. I always put my whole heart into doing something. But of course I have to thank everyone for not getting fed up with me," he added with a laugh.

These days, though, Su spends more time acting. He has just done a voiceover for an MTV animation which aims to highlight the dangers of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

And if he has worries about whether he, as a Taiwanese artist, will in the future have trouble appealing to a mainland audience, he does not reveal them.

"We all speak the same language," Su said. "Some people will still be able to produce works which move everyone."

MTV uses anime to fight human trafficking in China
Thu Jun 11, 2009 7:28pm EDT

By Ben Blanchard

BEIJING (Reuters) - One of China's most sought-after actors is starring in an animated short film about human trafficking and sexual exploitation, issues that have plagued the country, and the rest of Asia, for decades.

Zhang Hanyu, who won the Chinese equivalent of an Oscar at the Golden Horse awards in Taiwan last year, lends his voice to the Mandarin version of "Intersection," will be shown on Music Television (MTV) China this weekend.

Thai and English versions have already been broadcast on MTV's Southeast Asia channels, and versions in other Asian languages are planned.

The film is told from the perspective of five people, including a brothel owner, a trafficker and the victim. Both humorous and darkly depressing, "Intersection" is designed to put its message across in a medium young people can relate to.

"I hope the animation will stir meaningful conversations among youth about how we can fight against this tragic form of modern-day slavery," Zhang said.

Chinese actress Yuan Quan and Taiwanese singing and acting veteran Alec Su also give their voices to the film, described by MTV as an "adrenaline-fueled animation."

"Intersection" was produced by MTV EXIT's (End Exploitation and Trafficking) campaign, which works with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to raise awareness about human trafficking.

MTV EXIT previously has worked with such international stars as Angelina Jolie and South Korean pop sensation Rain.

"We're using a different medium, animation, to alert young people about the risks of human trafficking," said Olivier Carduner, USAID's Mission Director for Asia.

The film is also meant to be used by nongovernmental organizations and schools to spread its message.

Of the 2 million women and children trafficked every year, the United Nations estimates that 30 percent are in Asia.

China has said it was making progress in fighting the problem, both domestically and from Southeast Asian nations such as neighboring, poverty-stricken Myanmar. It has resorted to harsh punishments, including the death penalty, to deter it.

The trafficking of women into China in particular is driven by poverty and a skewed sex ratio in parts of the countryside, which makes it difficult for many farmers to find wives.

Poverty also forces many desperate Chinese to try to illegally enter other countries by paying traffickers known as "snakeheads," who often charge their victims exorbitant sums of money and force them to work as virtual slaves when they arrive.

In April, state media reported that Chinese police had broken up a ring trying to smuggle about 300 mainly young people into Costa Rica.
